What is PCB Layout ?

PCB Layout is the process of designing the physical arrangement of electronic components and their connections on a PCB. It involves placing components, routing electrical connections (traces), and defining layers, vias, and power/ground planes to ensure the board functions correctly, reliably, and is manufacturable.

PCB Layout Process

PCB Layout is the critical step of transforming a schematic diagram into a manufacturable printed circuit board. The process generally includes the following stages:

Preparation
  • Import the schematic.
  • Verify the accuracy of the component footprints and libraries.
  • Define board dimensions, layer count, routing rules, and electrical constraints.
Component Placement
  • Place all components in appropriate positions.
  • Consider signal flow, power distribution, thermal management, and mechanical constraints.
  • Optimize the placement to reduce routing complexity and enhance performance.
Routing
  • Route signal lines, power traces, and ground connections based on electrical rules.
  • Pay attention to impedance control, return paths, and noise for high-speed signals and sensitive circuits.
  • Use multilayer routing to simplify layout and improve signal integrity.
Power and Ground Plane Design
  • Ensure stable power delivery to all parts of the circuit.
  • Design continuous and solid ground planes to help with EMI control and signal quality.
Design Rule Check (DRC) and Electrical Rule Check (ERC)
  • Verify compliance with manufacturing rules such as trace width, spacing, and via sizes.
  • Check for electrical issues like unconnected nets or short circuits.
Gerber File and Manufacturing Documentation Output
  • Generate Gerber files, drill files, assembly drawings, BOM, and other documentation.
